Wekiva, FL Area Sports

With an average annual high of 83°F, Orlando has a thriving sports scene.  Many youth and amateur sports tournaments are held in the area year round. Also, Orlando offers local sports fans an array of events and teams that can be enjoyed throughout the year. Orlando is home to the two-time, NBA Eastern Conference Champions, the Orlando Magic, the excitement of MLB spring training and the serene greens of the many area golf courses.

Every spring Major League Baseball comes to Central Florida in the form of spring training with the Atlanta Braves and the Houston Astros.  The Braves utilize the facilities at the Disney’s Wide World of Sports complex which is also host to many youth and amateur sports tournaments throughout the year.  The Astros work out at the Osceola County Stadium Complex in Kissimmee, FL.

For the past several years, Orlando hosted the Mascot Games, bringing together the mascots of MLB, NBA, NFL and other professional sports mascots for a unique sporting event that benefits a local charity.

Just a short drive to the west and residents can enjoy the NFL with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, the NHL with the Tampa Bay Lightning and the MLB with the Tampa Bay Rays.  About 45 minutes to the east in Daytona, race fans can enjoy the car revving action of the Daytona International Speedway.  Whether experiencing the thrill of the Daytona 500 first hand with the Daytona 500 Experience exhibit or watching a race from the stands, Daytona adds to the excitement of Central Florida.

In addition to the multitude of professional sporting events that the Orlando Metro area has to offer, Wekiva’s neighbor, Altamonte Springs, has an extensive sports and programs division that strives to provide activities for all ages and all skills levels.  The division offers various sports from baseball and basketball to volleyball and weightlifting.  There are five city activity centers that include sports fields, basketball and tennis courts, a gymnasium and a pool.

Within another city near the Wekiva area, Longwood’s parks and recreation department organizes an abundance of youth and amateur sports.  Local youth baseball is offered through the Babe Ruth League.  Other youth sports include basketball, karate and tennis.  Adults can participate in the co-ed softball league that plays at the local sports parks. Several exercise classes such as yoga and Pilates are offered at the community building.
